Really interesting read - IM Greg Shahade: "Slow Chess should die a fast death"!

2015??
What the hell OP...
My moma always said never to click on strange links.. my fault.
The link even has "2015" in it. :p

Anyway, all I can say about this is that I absolutely love playing chess OTB with very long time controls. Finding opponents for similar time controls online is just impossible, so I fall back on correspondence chess there.

I do also play a ot of blitz online - but I consider that mainly as a "test" of how good my reflexes / chess intuition has become so far, and where my current weaknesses in my play are. I'd honestly prefer replacing every single online blitz session with a long, serious OTB tournament game.

Maybe that's just because I'm still relatively new to chess... I have noticed that a lot of "veterans" seem to mainly play bullet / hyperbullet or other perversions of chess - sthg that I cannot enjoy at all (yet?).

Edit: Just played another rapid game after a long time without any:
lichess . org / xdCbymgb / black
I already know again why I stopped playing rapid online, despite greatly preferring long time controls.

Edit2: Is there a way to avoid auto-embedding the game? I'd prefer to post a link only.
Yea I think thats a girl , also he left out one other thing fear no one wants to have to face the devastation that comes from time given to someone along the lines of G Kasporav and the old time battles to the death, (world championships that go on unlimited). shorter time periods a a different game these games are about playing the perfect game and come from the programmers, may they rest from their suffering in hell, if you havent noticed the term 'tactics" is not relished at the tata steel tourny. They come from time. Also she maybe part sicilian and that opening rules at the time limits
Why are people getting so emotional and upset about this? Kinda silly.
Try to be honest with your self and you will see that article contains a lot of truth in it.

If you actually enjoyed playing one game for hours then you would do that, but you do not.
@BestSiteEver Except people here do. I play pretty much only correspondence chess on this site. People also have reasons for not playing longer time controls online, one major one being computer assistance, which is a valid enough reason not to trust playing long games online. Your statistical argument is both wrong and irrelevant, as it also has no bearing on what chess should be.
IMHO given the rise of internet chess and looking at what privates are doing (PCL, GCT and their universal rating) it's inevitable that the future of professional chess players will be a well balanced mix between classical time controls and rapid games, either in the same tournament or in separate ones.

To be honest, it also makes sense in terms of ability to sell the event (to be kept under 3 hours with breaks, like a football/basketball match), while keeping the intensity high.

Let's face it: the tiebreakers at the WC were ridiculously intense!
True. I do believe classical chess in the future will become a mix between classical time controls and rapid games.

Tournaments could make the final game last longer.
A lot of people are missing the point here. As a PLAYER, you may love classical time controls. Of that I have no argument. But as a SPECTATOR, 4-6 hour games are, for MOST PEOPLE, absolutely unwatchable. I'm very much a novice at chess, but love to watch good players play 15-20 minutes games (per side). I simply cannot watch 2700's playing for 5-6 hours. It's mind numbing boring. Did anyone watch the blitz tournaments a few months ago? Those were the most exciting games I've ever seen as a chess fan!

Look, if you like slow chess, play it! If you want to continue tournaments that take two weeks to complete, do it! But don't expect chess to ever change much because for spectators it's BORING!!! Fire away!
"Often one of the best indicators that a chess game is interesting is that amateurs think it isn't!" - Garry Kasparov 2016

Money is the only reason to shorten the classic game of chess!
