To play or not to play? This is the question

Have you ever refused to play someone? Why or why not? Does a player's rating have a role in that decision?
Of course. I've left games against opponents that are much stronger because it was almost inconceivable that I would win.

I've also left games against much weaker opponents because if I do something stupid and lose, I'll go down in rating a lot and if I win, I'll only gain about 1 point.

Either way, there's not much point playing them.
Regarding if a player's rating have a role in a player's decision to cancel games when someone with a lower rating joins, it shouldn't happen.

When you create a game, you have the option to choose the elo rating of the players that can join. But unfortunately, some people seem to don't know it. I have joined several games with people with much higher rankings than me and they cancel it inmediately. If I could join it in the first place, is because they allowed me to it when they chose the elo rating of the people who could join.

If someone defies you out of nowhere and they have a much lower rating and you don't want to play with them, fine. But don't be an idiot and create a game where everyone can join just to cancel it if someone with a lower rating joins.
If you don't mind me asking IDetestChess, why do you leave games against much higher and much lower rated opponents? I can understand weaker but you will only become superficially stronger with opponents of your level. That is to say, don't give people with high ratings respect they don't deserve. It's surprisingly how many high rated people on this site play stupid openings that won't give them any advantage. I've already said too much, good night.
i always play people higher rated than myself, and rarely play 1200s or something like that, 1500 is the lowest i usually go. mostly because i want to improve and be challenged when i play.

however, if someone challenges me directly i always accept no matter what their rating is
Have played many 10,000's of games on various sites. This site is full of cheaters. Would be great if it wasn't the case, as I can very much get behind the "open source" ideals, having used BSD and linux for the past 20 years. Now that you have a good platform, you need to focus on stopping all of the obvious cheating on your site if you want people with a clue to play here / if you want any kind of future. Will give an example; was playing someone around 12-1300 that took a 2 minute break mid-game. They come back, are playing all top engine moves. Nothing new to anyone with online chess experience. I send in a ticket. The site says: "If they were a cheater, their rating would be much higher".
A hint to start you off: next to no online chess cheaters cheat for every move in every game
Most of the times, i choose the games on the main lobby rather than creating the games myself. I like to play with stronger players, most of the time. Even if I don't win, I'm always learning something and improving through the hard way (which is losing).

Sometimes I play against lower rated players, just because I think I can help them to improve, using the same logic above. When I want to have a fair game and relax (like, when I'm not feeling I can do my best), I just choose players with similar rating.
Sorry if I came off rude earlier, it's frustrating to encounter cheating and if you play alot, is guaranteed to happen.
Hey canyouhearmenow! Can you hear me now? :D

I know what you mean. I guess I've neve gone through this kind of situation, I mean, facing cheaters. I've played some great opponents and many other underdogs. IMO, the difference between them seemed quite clear. Those who play great chess do it all the time; however, poor players cannot do the same.

Greetings from Brazil.
