How to play this position?

Recently, I had an OTB game (I was black) that featured the From's Gambit. It ran 1. f4 e5 2. fxe5 d6 3. exd6 Bxd6 4. Nf3 g5 5. g3 g4 6. Nh4 Ne7 7. d4 Ng6 8. Nxg6 hxg6. My opponent blundered with 9.Bg2 allowing 9...Rxh2, but after going over this game, I saw that after the correct 9.Qd3 white has a nice win percentage in the masters database, and black has an unclear way to find compensation for the pawn. Any ideas if there is a previous move that offered black better chances, or if not, a good way to play the position after 9.Qd3?
Thanks in advance.
I have played 1.f4 as white for many years. Instead of 4. ... g5, I preffer 4. ... Nf6 to play Ng4 next against almost any move. As an f4 player I know this line is very difficult for white. After Ng4 black have ideas of Bxh2 among other threats.
Objectively the From's Gambit just isn't good I would imagine.
And also g5 isn't the most sound move (though it gives white practical problems which shouldn't be underestimated), you can just play 4...Nf6 and normal development.
Or you just leave it alltogether and play a proper 1st move. :D
In blitz or so the From's Gambit is great, but at slow time controls OTB I am sceptical.
Nope, 9.Qd3 is the refutation of the gambit, white comes out better in every variation. Also, I didn't test it but I suppose that Nf6-g4 should also result in a disadvantage. So basicly, with correct play white should win against your gambit, so feel free to change^^
I can suggest you 1.f4 Nh6!? with the ideas of 2.e4 d5! or on every other move g6 and Bg7, and in general, as long as white doesn't have a pawn on e4 himself Nh6 is pretty ok move. Against stonewall (c3,d4,e3,f4) you just play Nd7-f6, Nh6-f5-d6 and later on Bf5,Nf6-e4 and maybe f6+e5. Or you just play normal chess from move 1 on ;)
i believe that the current theoretical state of things is that 4..g5 is better for white, but 4..Nf6 is fine with the idea that todo_pro mentioned.

is 1..Nh6 any better than 1..g6 except for shock value? i guess you can play without g6 in the line f4 Nh6 e4 d5 e5?
i appreciate shock value though, i must say :D
Against 4. ... g5 I don't play 5.g3; I'm gonna play 5.d4 and if 5. ... g4, I play 6.Ne5. I don't mind exchanging queens and playing with the bishop pair plus an extra pawn. I win 76% of my games in that line. That's why I suggest Nf6, which I find very annoying to play against.
I am not the inventor of this move (IM Nicolas Lubbe, 2500 Elo, from chess24; who is a friend of mine propagated this), and he is more of the rapport player, so yes, from his standpoint of view it is a pure schock value, but it is nethertheless.
But it's true, that aside from 2.e4 there is no benefits of not playing 1. ... g6. So the question is, why not play 1. ... d5 instead and here I am not sure. Of course Nh6 is not that bad of a place for the night (aswell as in leningrad as in stonewall it is a main move, alas later), maybe it is the option to play without d5, maybe even d6,e5,f5,0-0? So I would just say it is a slightly different approach, and I can guarantee it will not lose you the game (apart that there is no real theory to learn), so jsut try it you and shock your opponents :)
Objectively 1... d5, 1... Nf6 or 1... c5 may be stronger, but the From gambit 1...e5 may be viable as well.
Personally I like 4...Bg4, 5... Nc6 6...Qe7 7...o-o-o, though my over the board results with it are disheartening.
I recently watched a GM Niclas Huschenbeth video where he played 1. f4 Nh6!? In that game, he showed one idea of the line. His opponent played 2. b3?! allowing 2...e5! with the idea of playing an improved From's Gambit because the black knight can still hop to g4 while white has played the sub-optimal b3
1...Nh6 is very cunning, but 2 e4! is tough.
By the way even 1 f4 e5 2 e4 transposing to the King's gambit might objectively be stronger.
